Life in the California Boys' Choir

SCENES FROM THE SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAM

Hours of hard work in choral and staging rehearsals and theory classes, together with moments of mirth and discipline and the joy of companionship, make the afternoon's swimming and the evening's supper a special delight.

Behind the success of the Choir are several factors: an excellent and dedicated staff, sacrificing and long-suffering parents, and a group of talented and purposeful boys, who spend eleven weeks together in Summer Training Program, away from home except for three weekend visits. In STP, a boy learns to concentrate, to budget time, to look after his own needs (without mom around to remind!), and to learn the importance of personal development and its place in the growth of the ensemble.

Classes are held in music theory, voice, stage awareness and discipline, repertoire, imagination, improvisation, and recorder. Time is provided for individual instrumental practice. Swimming is a favorite daily activity during STP, as is tennis in the early morning hours. The goal of the Summer Training Program is to prepare the Choirboys and mold the ensemble for the concert season, which is late September through May.

Since 1973, the California Boys' Choir has made its summer home at the beautiful La Sierra campus of Loma Linda University in Riverside.

Summer Training is not for every boy. Only the boys who strongly desires to improve himself to become a self-motivating, honest citizen, and who is generous with his talent, to share himself with others, will obtain the sense of accomplishment at summer's end.
