The California Boys Choir
The Artistic Staff
Mr. Neslund is a native of Southern California, born in Los Angeles, and raised in Anaheim and Gardend Grove. He began his formal music training at age four in piano. Under- graduate education included one year at the Akademie der Music und Darstellender Kunst in Vienna, Austria. Mr. Neslund graduated from Loma Linda University's College of Arts and Sciences in 1966. Since that time, he has studied Choral and orchestral conducting at the University of Southern California under Dr. Charles Hirt, Dr. James Vail, and the late Ingolf Dahl. He spent one year of his military obligation in Vietnam.
California Boys' Choir grew out of Mr. Neslund's Master's Degree work at USC, and early on, found employment in opera, ballet and symphony performances at the Music Center, Los Angeles. After retiring in 1984, Mr. Neslund studied abroad with Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden of the Tölzer Knabenchor, and had the pleasure of conducting that famous boychoir in 1989.
Mr. Neslund strongly advocates the use of what has become known as the Kodály Method in teaching choirs, especially the use of solfege while teaching repertoire.
Robert Rogers is a native of Chicago and a former choirboy at St. Meinrad Abbey in Indiana and the Paulist Choristers in Chicago under the leadership of Father William Finn. His early ambition to be a stage director led him to study with some of the world's greatest operatic artists, including the Master Class of Friedelind Wagner at Bayreuth, Germany. Mr. Roger's 22 year career in opera associated him with Dorothy Kirsten, James McCracken, Frank Guerrera and Ramon Vinay, among others. Rogers joined the choir in 1972 and has gained international reputation for his concept of the Staged Boychoir Concert.
STEVEN J. WARNER - Choir Accompanist
Mr. Warner's music training began in early childhood. His association at Hollywood High School with Professor Joseph Hofrichter, one of Los Angeles' outstanding music teachers, inspired him to develop his musical and pianistic talents, and prepared him to teach the members of the California Boys' Choir music theory at college level during summer training. Mr. Warner has appeared several time on the Lawrence Welk Television Show. He worked as a Paramedic with the Los Angeles fire Department in addition to his work with the Choir. Mr. Warner served the Choir as Accompanist since 1973.
